Apprenticeship Manitoba Responds to Electrologist Moratorium Concerns
As of May 29th, Meghan Lavallee, Executive Director of Apprenticeship Manitoba, has confirmed that the Electrologist trade is currently under active review by the Apprenticeship and Certification Board. While this acknowledgement is encouraging and represents one of the clearest public statements made on the issue in recent years, the response does not include a timeline, anticipated decision date, or specific next steps for those affected by the moratorium.
The Following Is the Response Received from Meghan Lavallee, Executive Director of Apprenticeship Manitoba:
Thank you for contacting the office of the Honourable Jamie Moses, Minister of Business, Mining, Trade and Job Creation on May 21, 2026 regarding the status of the Electrologist trade in Manitoba. I appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective about this trade. As Executive Director of Apprenticeship Manitoba, I am pleased to respond.
As you noted, in Manitoba the trade of Electrologist is provincially regulated and designated as a compulsory certification trade. A moratorium for new registrations and certifications in this trade is currently in place. We recognize the concerns this creates for those who wish to enter the trade, as well as for Manitobans seeking access to these services.
The status of the trade of Electrologist is currently under active discussion before the Apprenticeship and Certification Board (board). We recognize that industry needs have evolved over time, and we are giving this matter careful consideration to ensure an appropriate balance between establishing accessible pathways to practice in the province and supporting safe, high-quality outcomes.
Future updates on the trade will be posted on the Apprenticeship Manitoba website at https://www.gov.mb.ca/apprenticeship/explore-trades/trade-profiles/electrologist.html.
We thank you for sharing your perspective and interest in providing electrologist services. Please know that your feedback will be shared with the board as part of our assessment of this trade.
Sincerely,
Meghan Lavallee Executive Director Apprenticeship Manitoba Business, Mining, Trades and Job Creation
Looking Ahead
For many stakeholders, this remains a significant concern. Similar discussions have taken place in the past without resulting in meaningful action, leaving prospective practitioners, business owners, and clients facing years of uncertainty. Existing electrology businesses continue to struggle with succession planning, while individuals interested in entering the profession remain without a pathway forward despite growing demand for services. We appreciate that the government has recognized the issue and confirmed that it is under review. However, after years of delays, stakeholders are seeking more than acknowledgement. A clear timeline, regular updates, and a defined path forward are needed to restore confidence that meaningful progress is being made and that a resolution is forthcoming.
